In 2018, the movement towards federal IT modernization continues to gain momentum as critical pieces fall into place impacting agencies, Congress, and the private sector. In addition to important legislation such as FITARA and the Modernizing Government Technology (MGT) Act, there has been a succession of Executive Orders around modernizing the IT environment and enhanced authorities for federal Chief Information Officers. The Center for Public Policy Innovation (CPPI) and Homeland Security Dialogue Forum (HSDF) are organizing a series of events to highlight the various stakeholders that have responsibility for developing, overseeing, and executing IT modernization plans across the federal government and look at solutions the private sector can bring to make modernization a reality.
The first event in this series took place April 13 at the Capitol Visitor Center. It featured a panel of experts and roundtable discussion highlighting modernization strategies for federal agencies and the implementation of MGT legislation. The perspective of the CIO was provided by Mr. Shane Compton, CIO at the National Park Service; the federal CFO angle was covered by Ms. Jolene Lauria, Controller at the Department of Justice; and the industry partner was Mr. Michael Preis, Vice President and Partner, Public Sector at IBM who discussed the findings of IBM’s report A Roadmap for IT Modernization in Government.
